On marilyn my small home server I am hearing this daunting click-click-click sound from one of the two HDs (paired up as a RAID1 device). This time I am ready—-I’ll just leave it until the dying HD is dead beyond hope, pull it out, put a new one in and allow the RAID to rebuild overnight.
Peace of mind is good.

You are an optimist.
I find computers, or anything even just remotely related to computers, never do anything complete to spec as they are supposed to or exactly what one wanted or expected them to. There is always a little something that does not work entirely correctly.

I am just prepared. And pick my vendors carefully.
Angel my Tibook, Pluto my Linux workstation, marilyn my OpenBSD small server, and mother our OpenBSD coop server, all work as advertised and expected. Only when I go cheap like http://www.utopian.com.hk/TOPCONLCD-D1-S.htm is it unreliable, but it is nonetheless a 17” 1280×1024 LCD panel, as advertised and expected.
Can’t say the same thing about software from a certain big company.

My cousin’s iMac had to be replaced once and then the harddisk replaced twice in less than two years. Nothing is garanteed.
(I’m posting this as I walk while shopping with Melinda. Just forthe hell of it…)
