New Tool

October 28th, 2003 · 3 Comments

Thanks to James tipping me off about the special price Fortress in Mongkok has for the Palm Tungsten C, I have acquired this new toy tool, for the good price of HK$2,792.

The salesperson informed me that the Mongkok Fortress is doing special offers till 6/11/2003 on various items, to fight off the new big electronic goods store right opposite them. These offers are not available in other Fortress stores.

Nice screen, good thumbboard, very good WiFi reception, tons of memory, fast. Should be very good for blogging on the road. I am however somewhat surprised that the middle button in the 5-way navigator has no tactile feedback like the other keys. I’d have to check w/ a colleague who has a Tungsten T (w/ the same 5-way navigator) to see if this is the case or whether there is something wrong with my unit.

Update (21:40): My colleague’s T/T’s middle key has tactile feedback. I have just hard reset my unit and it is going back to Fortress tomorrow.

Update (23:06): So this is why Mongkok Fortress is doing special sales promotions.

The traditional shop, Man Shing, will open for business on Sunday to welcome Gome as they don’t before no matter how we fans request.

This is indeed sad. I always thought that Man Shing had style, and cared about their employees, so that they can be with their families on Sundays when the shop is closed. Not anymore. Family values have to give in to commercial success and cut-throat competitiveness.

Sunday is not a good day to buy photographic equipment anyway. It is best to pick up a new camera or piece of equipment on a weekday (preferably on a Friday) test it out over the weekend and take it back on Monday if there is anything wrong with it. Buy it on a Sunday, and you’d probably wait a week before you get the time to play with it.

I prefer Mondays or Tuesdays, as most people had bought their stuff over the weekend, businesses tend to be slower on Mondays and Tuesdays therefore giving me ample testing and chatting time with the salesman. Also, I get a full week’s testing period and can either return for exchange in case of prohlems on the same week or a week after, either way would fall on a weekday which is not so busy. Whereas a Friday purchase would either land on a weekend exhange once you’ve discovered a problem, in which case, the salesman might not have as much time and patience as you would like him to have, or you’d have to wait a whole weekend to have it exchanged.
