The Salvation Army Nursery

We went to the Open Day of the Salvation Army Nursery just down the road from where we live this afternoon.

This nursery is popular. I like the fact that it is within walking distance, and thought that it would be neat if we could train Lily to take Jasper to nursery, so I put in an application for Jasper when he was around seven months old.

Last month we got a letter from the nursery, inviting us in for an interview for enrollment in September 2004 (by then Jasper will only be 2!) There is this form “Nursery New Enrollment Home Living Record”, containing questions such as:-

  1. Does he need to be fed by an adult?
  2. Can he use a spoon ( ) chopsticks ( )?
  3. Can he wipe his arse after taking a dump?
  1. Can he put on his own shoes?

I would be well pleased if Jasper can use chopsticks, wipe his own arse and cloth himself when he is two. Or maybe all 2 years olds can, and I have very low expectation?

My first response was that the interview is probably too early. I then thought that since birth rate these days is so low and a lot of kindergartens have problems recruiting, the headmistress would want us to secure a place for Jasper as early as possible.

Or so I thought. Just yesterday a colleague of mine, whose kid is about 3 months older than Jasper, was telling me that when she enquired at the Salvation Army Nurseries in Shatin and Junk Bay, they were all over-subscribed, by about 100% in Shatin.

Anyway, we went to the Open Day so Jasper could get a feel of the place, and we get to find out more about the school, the staff and about Montessori. He certainly had a good time there. Fingers crossed that the interview next week goes okay.

Alec still don’t know how to wipe his arse. He knows how to and does hop in to the tub and wash his arse after, but last time we tried to make him wip his arse about 2 years ago, he used up over half a roll of toilet paper and clogged up the bowl. I am not worried about this, as he’ll learn how in time.
