A New Mobile Phone?
December 27th, 2003 · Comments Off
I have been looking into getting one of those new mobile phones which takes photos and movies. I looked at the Nokia 6600, which were nearly perfect except one show-stopper.
The Nokia 7600 is cute, and at HK$3,888 from Broadways, one would expect the latest offering from Nokia to be a reasonable smartphone. After a bit [...]

The Economists on Coffee-houses

Article.
The thing is, it is quite usual to walk into a pub and down a couple of pints (well, obviously not if one needs to get back to work), which means one spends quite considerable time there. Althou I suppose you could, but it just doesn’t seem right to me to go to your local [...]

HSBC is a Negative Impact on Hong Kong Productivity
December 27th, 2003 · 1 Comment
I needed to desposit some money into a HSBC account on 24/12 in Central. The HSBC branch at the Exchange Square was small and packed. The one in China Building is flipping massive, but is only for f*cking Prestige Accounts. I waited in the queue at the HSBC Building for about 40 minutes. Only about [...]

Revolving Window vs Annual Diary
December 27th, 2003 · 1 Comment
Right now this weblog displays entries for the last 12 months. If I don’t change anything, in a few days it will be showing entries from 1/2004 to 2/2003.
I have been considering whether to break up the weblog, i.e. generate a static one for the year 2003, and start afresh from 2004 beginning w/ just [...]

These Gadgets are not Built to Last

I have had my Buffalo WiFi AP for about 2 years now, and I am mostly happy with it.
About a few weeks ago I noticed that the WiFi network appeared to have stopped working. As the Internet routing/broadband sharing features still worked, and I was kinda busy I didn’t dig to the bottom of it. [...]

Saved by Backup
December 26th, 2003 · 2 Comments
Mum took about 100 photos of her recent trip to Yunan w/ my Canon A40. I downloaded the files and burnt a CD for her viewing pleasure on her DVD player. Then I wiped the files because I needed the disk space.
She didn’t want to mess w/ the DVD player, and wanted prints instead. [...]

A Tool for the D2H
December 23rd, 2003 · Comments Off
Now that it is clearer how the optional WiFi thingy works on the D2H, it seems that a WiFi base-station might come in handy:-
slim, light, low powered, electronic device
runs on rechargable batteries and power brick
boots up instantly or at least quickly
big hard disk, e.g. 60GB laptop HD
ethernet port for connecting to LAN and/or ADSL modem
high [...]

Drool…

Cool camera reviewed. Not even that out of reach.
My fellow photographers were telling me that people are flocking over to the Canon camp, and Hak Cheong’s shelves are stuffed with Nikon lenses. Good.

Back from Macau
December 22nd, 2003 · 2 Comments
We have had a good time. Very nice buffet dinner at the Mandarin Oriental Macau. Haven’t stuffed myself like this for a long long time. Good fun.
Must be getting old. Went massaging on Sunday, and now I feel like having been beaten up.

Who Are These People?
December 19th, 2003 · Comments Off
A 44 years old medical researcher, presumably having received advanced education, worked on potentially contaminated materials w/o protective gear, didn’t do anything about it, bumped off to Singapore, developed fever, didn’t think too much about it, and did not realize he had contracted SARS until he developed diarrhea on December 15!
Not to mention all the [...]

Followup on Jasper’s Interview
December 16th, 2003 · Comments Off
We received a letter from the Salvation Army Nursery, confirming that Jasper has been accepted for enrollment in Oct 2004. Registration in beginning of January.
The “interview” was more like a chat between the Head Teacher and the parents. This nursery althou provides the full pre-school education, is quite different to kindergartens. There are no tests [...]

I Call It “Flickwerk”, Anja Calls It “Sidewinder”
December 16th, 2003 · Comments Off
I have just received an email from Anja giving me her blessing for implementing her “sidewinder” idea in my weblog.
The Flickwerk weblog is a static file rendered by the wickedly cool Tinderbox.
I couldn’t figure out how to get MovableType to sort out blog entries by months and render them into the index page. Instead I [...]

AppleCare
December 16th, 2003 · Comments Off
When I bought my TiBook, I also bought the extended AppleCare 3 year warranty service (it was on a special promotion with a discount.)
I took my TiBook to my dealer last Tuesday (9/12) (AppleCare services are actually done by the authorized dealers in Hong Kong), and got a call on Saturday (13/12). They replaced the [...]

Finally…
December 15th, 2003 · 1 Comment
A new look for the default page of this weblog. A whole year’s worth of blog on one page!
The design is a cheap imitation of Anja Rau’s excellent Flickwerk design. I hope Anja takes this as a form of flattery.
