A New Mobile Phone?

December 27th, 2003 · No Comments

I have been looking into getting one of those new mobile phones which takes photos and movies. I looked at the Nokia 6600, which were nearly perfect except one show-stopper.

The Nokia 7600 is cute, and at HK$3,888 from Broadways, one would expect the latest offering from Nokia to be a reasonable smartphone. After a bit of research, it turns out that the 7600 is the 6650 in a new case. It is not a smartphone, so there is no Symbian UI on it. Unlike the 6600, it doesn’t take any memory cards, so memory is limited to the built-in 29MB. It is supposed to support some form of 3G network, but the first 3G network launch in Hong Kong is not due until next year. At the initial release price, it is way over-priced.

Having said the above, at least Nokia has gotten the position of the eyelet for the strap right: at the bottom of the phone, so when one is wearing the strap on one’s neck, there is no need to twist the strap when holding it upright. I have no idea why everybody else seems to have done it wrong.
