I was once told that it is interesting to see how human intelligence develops in small childen.
Jasper is now 16 months old. He loves watching his Uncle Michael playing games on the PS2, and he tries to interact w/ the game console. He actually gets to play w/ a couple of game controllers Uncle Mike no longer uses.
Mike showed me Jasper’s understanding of an abstract idea. We sat Jasper in front of the PS2 + TV, gave him an unconnected game controller (I don’t think Jasper still understands that the game controller needs to be plugged in), then showed him some game help, which had a line drawing of the game controller. Jasper looked at the picture on the TV, then looked down at his controller, and tried to press some buttons on it. It was quite obvious that he related the line drawing on the TV w/ the controller he had. I couldn’t quite belive it until I saw it myself.
Jasper also reacts whenever the game character hits a badie: he knew what is happening in the game. Mike is going to stick to car racing games from now on whenever Jasper is present.
Then it was time for Jasper to eat. I asked Jasper whether he wanted to eat. He shoke his head. I asked again, and he shoke his head again, preferring to concentrate on the PS2. Then I told him that if he didn’t eat then Uncle Michael would not let him play on the PS2 again. He gave in and willingly went to eat. Some reasonable kid we have got here.
