I was catching up with some soap drama last night. The female Police Inspector just had a baby, and went back to work when the baby was only one month old.

The thing is, women in Hong Kong are entitled to at least six weeks (too short in my opinion) of maternity leave. Most mothers these days shift the maternity leave around so it’s eight weeks after birth. Being a confirmed Inspector (she had 2 stars on her shoulder) she’s probably entitled to over a month of annual leave a year. A friend of ours who works at the Agricultural and Fisheries Dept didn’t return to work until her baby girl was four or five months old.

I am also not happy to see formula-bottle-feeding as the norm in the media, given the advantages of breast-feeding and the HKSAR Govt’s official position. I absolutely hate that CLP advert with the mother and the baby. (The Lady pointed out that breast-feeding at nite is normally done in the dark, so CLP’s advert wouldn’t work otherwise.)
