Hellboy

The movie, and comics.

About ten years ago, attempts were made to introduce American comics into Hong Kong and published them in Chinese. Jade Comics (not controlled by Tony Wong, who was/had been in prison then) with much fanfare published a few X-Mens, while two smaller publishers published a couple of Lobo and Hellboy.

I had not heard of these comics previosly. Didn’t like X-Mens then, ‘cos its universe was too complex, and involved far too many characters. However, I loved Lobo and Hellboy.

American comics are very different to what folks in Hong Kong are used to. Firstly they open to the left and run from left to right, while Japanese and Hong Kong comics open to the right and run from right to left. Secondly Japanese and Hong Kong comics are much tighter frame to frame, making them a lot more movie-like. Cultural shock or what. The problem was, folks who were fans already were reading the original English version anyway. Folks who were not fans didn’t like them. The attempts to introduce American comics to Hong Kong never got anywhere.

I definitely look forward to seeing the Hellboy movie.
