For the first time in his life, Jasper had a few Lotte Koala No March yesterday.
He has been a real PITA today. Rest assured he won’t be having any more of these sweets. At least until he goes to school.

Mother Down
May 29th, 2004 · 2 Comments
Mother the coop server went down the third time unintentionally at 1100 hours this morning since it went up to the rack about nine months ago. By around 1300 hours it was obvious that it was no network glitches. I suppose I should have gone into the data centre, plug a monitor and a keyboard [...]

A Doomed Format
May 28th, 2004 · 5 Comments
Bought a Kenwood “hifi” component system for Jasper so he could listen to some CDs in bed. It was on special, takes 3 CDs and 1 MD.
After reading the user manual and playing with the MD player/recorder a bit, I reached the conclusion that MD is doomed. For recording it is a lot more convenient [...]

CEO at the Frontline
May 27th, 2004 · Comments Off
Allen Lee is having a grand field trip at the LegCo right now. The three teacup presenters at CR1 are getting very excited, and CR’s CEO has just decided to extend the teacup programme for another 30 minutes until the LegCo hearing ends.
The CR’s organization is very interesting. Creative, lean, flexible and consistent. In contrast, [...]

Dropping Like Fireflies

After standing in for Tai Pan for two weeks, Allen Lee has just quitted from his morning radio programme. Commercial Radio seems to have problems retaining their top radio show presenters.
Lee said he didn’t want to lose his friends, and he wasn’t enjoying it, therefore his decision. Ironic that he kept mentioning Tai Pan’s column [...]

My Own 3G Experience

My friend Stephen gave up on his 3G handset, and plugged his SIM card into a 2G handset to get on with his life. I borrowed his NEC c313 to play with.

2LD .hk Domain Names Part III
May 17th, 2004 · 2 Comments
I have just spoken to a sales representative of the HKDNR. It turns out that one does not pay the HK$200 HK$250 annual registration fee when submitting the application, and only pays it when it is finally registered (i.e. at the end of the sunrise period, when nobody else wants the same domain name, or [...]

The Concept Device with an Unfortunate Name

The name OnQ happens to be a Cantonese slang for “stupid prick”. Not that it is too far from the truth (the device I mean).

BAFO External Harddisk Box

The BAFO Firewire Harddisk box I had blew a few weeks ago. I took it in for repair earlier this week. The agent had moved since issuing the warranty card. No big deal since it was only a couple of blocks away from their previous address. There was no name plate outside the new office, [...]

Not quite. There is no Moses. Just a bunch of self-organizing intelligent people. Carthik has a guide for migrating from MT to WordPress. Mark Pilgrim did it, and I could have been fooled if he didn’t mention it.
I am sticking with MT 2.6 for the time being. James and I are both reasonably happy with [...]

Wow!

I am going to say it again: the new Blogger is neat™. Take a look at this sample, hosted on mother.
Update (15:53): Spoken to Ah Leung earlier. He was aware that he could host his weblog on mother. He couldn’t decide what domain name to get, and was waiting/watching HKDNR’s .hk domain.

Networking Equipment Hard to Describe
May 13th, 2004 · Comments Off
I was speaking to Marcus over the phone yesterday on my newly acquired NEC Warpstar WiFi thingy. At first he didn’t grok it, so I gave him an example: say he has two desktop computers in a room not connected to the LAN and far away from his WiFi router/AP. To get these two computers [...]

No reason not to. In fact, I should have done it ages ago.
James reported mother being down yesterday. When I got home a few hours later it was all back to normal.
When a packet travels from one of our personal computers to mother, it passes thru at least three different parties’ equipment, and like [...]

NEC Warpstar Aterm WL11E2
May 12th, 2004 · 3 Comments
Went to SSP Golden yesterday, and I came across this gem, hidden in a pile of surplus NEC WiFi equipment aimed only for the Japanese market.
This little gem is in effect two-ports WiFi hub/switch. The package comes with the device itself (about 4” x 3” x 1”), a power supply, a small stand, an ethernet [...]

My friend Ah Leung emailed me about his new weblog on Blogger. I was somewhat puzzled by his choice. Being a member of our Coop, he can have his own MovableType or WordPress installation on mother if he asks.
It turns out that Blogger has recently relaunched, and is now much improved. Althou they would be [...]

More on The Hutchison 3G Experience
May 5th, 2004 · Comments Off
When my friend Stephen was sitting in his office, the phone showing that signal was okay, yet it dropped his line twice while he was talking to a client, Stephen decided that he had had enough, proclaimed Hutchison’s 3G service as “garbage”, and switched back to his old GSM phone. Good thing his SIM card [...]

Our swimming pool season started on 1/5. First day was free, and we took Jasper along.
We put him in his wetsuit, which fits much better this year. He was very nervous in the beginning, and grabbed me tight for the first few minutes, but calmed down shortly and was having an excellent time. He became [...]
