Since acquiring my toy audio equipment, I have spend more time listening to music. It’s just nicer to listen to music on your own, without bothering others. Others also tend to observe and respect your solitude when you have a pair of headphones on.
Both of our mini component systems have problems driving my headphones. The [...]

People are furious about ICAC obtaining search warrants to search newspaper publishers’ premises.
From now on, I suggest everyone to make use of encryption software, so if law enforcement agencies want your data, they will have to obtain a court order for you to reveal the pass phrase.
Oh, and keep off-site backups (perfect job for mother!), [...]

A Director of the Commercial Radio, Winnie Yu, in response to a newspaper advert, just announced on this morning’s Teacup programme that they are negotiating with Tai Pan on terminating Tai Pan’s contract. She stressed that Tai Pan was not sacked.
Tai Pan’s partner Lam is on leave right now, but Yu revealed that Lam had [...]

Weblog Spam Control using IP Address

Via the excellent Bloglines I read the often insightful Russell Beattie Notebook. Russell writes his own weblog software, and in my book someone write his or her own software, deserves a lot of respect.
His implementation of moderated comments is interesting: approval by him and from then on auto-acceptance by IP addresses stored on his system. [...]

Book Fair 2004
July 24th, 2004 · 1 Comment
I received some promo stuff from Longman about their special offers at the Book Fair. Jasper found it and wanted the Finding Nemo and Lion King Ladybird books.
I went on Friday and took advantage of a cheap after-6 ticket. It has been years since I last visited a Book Fair, and I nearly forgot why [...]

Kernel Panic

Mother crashed shortly after midnight last night. I didn’t find out about it until this morning.
This has been the 2nd crash in the last two months, since last time. A bit too frequent for comfort, so instead of asking the KDDI staff to reset mother, I went to the data centre to conduct a post-mortem.
The [...]

Free Motorola 3G Phone

I called Hutchison 3 to cancel my 3G subscription. Some guy called me back and asked me why I cancelled. I told him that I was only playing with a friend’s NEC and I found the network rather poor. He told me that there were software upgrades which would help. I told him that I [...]

Nice headphone.
Really nice headphone.
This is cheaper, and more than good enough.
Only problem is, they are all a bear to drive, probably needing this. Making sensitive ear plugs like this not so expensive afterall.

Some Thoughts on Education

Philip Greenspun has suggested an alternative to America’s high school system.
This is certainly an interesting idea, althou it wouldn’t work in America. That US$12,000 is public money, fat chance seeing public money for public education going overseas.
OTOH, US$12,000/year is HK$7,800 a month, which a lot of the local parents in Hong Kong are already paying [...]

I have never doubt Yeo’s integrity, and as far as I am concerned, his biggest fault was joining a sinking ship. SARS was more our bad luck than his personal misfortune.
Fung was incompetent, and she ran away from it all. A disgrace.
Then it was Ko and gang. 10 days during the peak of SARS, yet [...]

The U.K. is considering switching off their analogue radio. In Hong Kong digital radio is nowhere to be seen. Does it take 330 staff to beat PCCW, Hutchison et al into submission, so not much else is done?
