MP3 Ringtones

September 20th, 2004 · 2 Comments

Why anybody would pay over HK$10 a pop for those awful sounding multi-chord ringtones really escapes me.

The latest bunch of mobile phones can all use MP3 files as ringtones, which beat crappy MIDI-like multi-chord ringtones hands down. However, what I have come across so far w/ people’s MP3 ringtones going off in public have been totally crap. Those folks use unedited MP3 song files as ringtones, and they have the volume on full blast. The results are often highly distorted (thru that dingy little speaker) and totally unimpressive or even annoying bits of music.

For editing digital sound files, one could do a lot worse than Audacity, which is multi-platform, and runs on Linux, Mac OS X and Windows.

I had a few MP3 songs on my 6230. The MP3 ringer actually doesn’t sound too bad; however, I couldn’t set the volume as ascending. Besides, no matter how loud it could be, with the phone in my jeans pocket, I either couldn’t hear it or couldn’t recognize it as a ringer. To me, music could be just another ambient sound which is of no use to me as a ringer even in a quite mall area. Midi-Cord type ringer is not much better either. The older 8310/8210 type ringers actually worked much better for me.

My brother-in-law uses a old dial type phone ringing sound as his Treo 600 ringer which works quite well. I also saw a movie where the guy had a train running with horn sound as his ringer. That might work for me too.

Your prayer has been answered! Audacity can make your MP3 song file to ascending volume.

One of the standard ring tone for the Cisco IP Phone at the office is a female voice “Are you there?”. I imagine Eric Clapton’s Layla guiter play would also serve the purpose very well, and with style.
