Sylvian called me to seek advice on his Golden Arcade-assembled noname computer. The cheap DVD writer went busted after 14 months and he went out to buy a even cheaper DVD writer, but none of his standalone DVD machines could read those newly burnt DVDs. The machine kept crashing, and going off and on. He kept wiping his HD and reinstalling Windows on his computer but it didn’t help. The machine didn’t work.
He still hasn’t taken my advice to get himself a broadband router to protect his computer from the Internet. Well good thing cheap bastards like him stick to iCable and HKBN.
I told him to go get himself a new iMac. It just works. He’ll spend far less time messing w/ inferior, low quality and substandard computer components and OS. He said since he uses his computer for pleasure he didn’t see much point in getting an expensive computer. I argue that unless he is a sadist, the pleasure he gets while he is struggling w/ his computer when it doesn’t work properly most of the time is precisely nil, and as a computing non-specialist, the iMac is his only hope of ever reaching nirvana. He wasn’t convinced.
Well each to his own. He was in SSP again yesterday, and managed to swap his new DVD writer to one HK$30 more expensive at the shop. He also bought a decent third party power supply to replace his old one. I presume he’s going to take my advice and pull the two(!) ancient 4G(!) HDs from his computer so they won’t overload his power supply.
Maybe he’s a sadist afterall.
