To promote the .hk domain names, HKDNR organized a web design competition some time ago. The results are out, and for the time being the champion may be viewed here. The person who did it is an illustrator. It is basically a full Flash site, w/ relatively poor usability and no consideration for making good use of the screen real estate to display the tiny bits of (dis)information. The different 3rd level domain names are representated by a bunch of shortened Japanese plastic suited cosplay characters of different colours of the name “Pearlman”, and the 2nd level domain name is represented by a special Pearlman who combines all powers of the other Pearlmans. It was obviously a cheap ripoff of the old Japanese plastic suited Rainbow Fighter.
The Pearlman concept is so 70’s. The background designs, colour scheme, layout etc. are all so 90’s.
It was probably a lot of work. Still crap thou.
I am going to look at the runner ups, and see if I could like any of them. Was it me, or was it the judges, or was it a general lack of creativity in Hong Kong?

Bloody noisy – that’s one of two things I felt when I was in the site, with the other being “I gotta get the hell out of this site”.
Most flash sites have a similar “introduction film” before entering the actual site. I always skip the intro and go straight to the site. “Annoying” is the only function of such intro that I could think of.
