It Does Not Make Sense

December 28th, 2004 · 1 Comment

This weblog is under attack of comment spammer(s) again. Among the normal viagra spams, there are a few hundred seemingly random spams, with random names, random email addresses and random urls (which don’t exist). These random spams don’t make sense, except to destroy the viability of the MovableType commenting system, and in effect also destroys the viability of the MovableType system.

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I think this is an organized attack against Six Apart, to push folks to migrate to another blog system.

Update (30/12): Since this entry, the weblog has been hit by the random nonsense comment spammer(s) again twice. Got a couple of emails from James (who probably got hit as well) with links to some comprehensive discussions on possible solutions.

“Forced preview” is easy to implement, but unfortunately won’t work in the long run. It only takes some small modification of the bot, and this solution would be beaten for good.

“Captcha” is probably the most effective method right now to fight comment spam. James Seng has a package good for MT, but to a layman it is not exactly easy to install. For that matter I find installing plugins for MT 2.X a complicated exercise.

Anyway, I got James Seng’s Captcha package installed on my and James’ weblogs, and comment spams seem to have stopped.

    Test comment.

Cool! It changes to a new code for every wrong entry.
