Mainland Chinese Bookshops

January 30th, 2005 · 3 Comments

I generally avoid going to Mongkok as much as I can. It’s just too crowded.

The Lady needed some books on Chinese language for her study. We were planning to go to the Book City in Shenzhen to look for them, but upon my old man’s recommendation we checked out Mongkok City Centre (right opposite to the Wing Shing camera shop). It turned out to be a very pleasant surprise.

There are bookshops mainly selling books published in the Mainland China in this building from the 8th floor to the 11th floor. Absolutely tons of books. And amazingly good value for money. All of these shops are SMEes, and in some of the shops you could tell that considerable thoughts have gone into the selection, unlike in the Book City where it is kinda difficult to find things I like. It is also amazing to see how far the printing quality of books published in the Mainland has come over the last few years.

The Lady got what she wanted in no time, and we got quite a few other books.

On the 8th floor there is an excellent bookshop specializing in children books at the end of the corridor, next to an outlet selling cheap-ish down feather coats. Had the Lady not wanting to check out the down feather coats, we would have missed this bookshop. We picked up a few excellent storybooks for Jasper, and discovered this gem: Monstrueux Bazar. This is one in a set of three very funny and imaginative comics for kids, originally in French, translated into Chinese. Pity I only picked one, so I’ll have to go back soon to get the other two. Highly recommended for kids and adults.

Picked up “A World without Thieves” starring Andy Lau on DVD (legit) for HK$16. Excellent movie.

IT Hall, a shop specializing in English computer books also moved to this building from Mongkok Computer Centre. The selection unfortunately is a bit lacking. Same goes for UniHall in Causeway Bay, which moved from the basement to upstairs.
