I Did My (Small) Bit for the Economy

May 30th, 2005 · 2 Comments

Went shopping yesterday.

Bought this for HK$199, from Justco Tuen Mun. Real arcade-style joystick. Pac-man, Galaxian, Dig-Dug, Rally-X and Bosconian all in one box. Only mono sound effects thou. Runs on four AA batteries and plugs straight into your TV. GREAT FUN. Highly recommended.

This highly entertaining book pokes fun at Japanese tokusatsu with physics, mathematics and [...]

Pleasant Surprise

May 29th, 2005 · 4 Comments

While playing around w/ my Planex BLW-04GM Wifi router, I enabled WPA on it. The ThinkPad being a relatively new machine supports it w/ no fuss. Then I tried to set it up w/ my 3 years old TiBook. Althou the options were there w/ the old 802.11b Apple Airport card, I didn’t expect it [...]

Weird Bit of Equipment

May 29th, 2005 · 3 Comments

For trouble-shooting w/ my Planex BLW-04GM I put my NEC Warpstar PCMCIA Wifi card (an original Orinoco clone) into my TiBook and fired up KisMAC to scan for Wifi traffic.
Firstly, this Planex is a really noisy bit of kit. Although it is not connected to any LAN or WAN, it still broadcasts lots of Wifi [...]

Nokia 770

May 28th, 2005 · Comments Off

I am quite excited about the Nokia 770, something Nokia calls an “Internet Tablet”.
It is open, and if it does what Nokia promises well enough and is cheap enough (US$350) then we’ll have a winner.
I have installed Python on my Nokia Series 60 mobile phone. It has a lot of potential. I have not played [...]

Temporary Change in Life

May 26th, 2005 · 2 Comments

My folks went away for the week, and Mike also went into camp, so there was nobody home. Lily our dog hates to be alone during the night, so mum asked me to sleep at their place to keep Lily company. For the last few days I went home for dinner, and go to my [...]

Using mother as Photo Library and Archive

May 23rd, 2005 · 3 Comments

There are six coop members, taking up around 10GB of disk space, leaving 50GB of free space at this point in time. I think it was the majority of coop members’ intention to host their photo and movie libraries when they first signed up. That didn’t completely materialize.
James mentioned that it takes far too long [...]

Peer Pressure?

May 21st, 2005 · 2 Comments

Before Ah Leung went off for his long family vacation, we had a little chat over the phone. He was saying that since discovering Toby’s weblog, everybody seem to be writing much harder.
He also pointed out that our blogging may be an alternative to the old NPC events, since we can no longer afford to [...]

Royal Doulton

May 17th, 2005 · 2 Comments

James blogged about some crappy electrical appliances bearing the Royal Doulton trade mark, being used as promotional items for one of the two local supermarket mega chains.
During my university years I spent two Christmas and New Year holidays working as a temp in a high street department store in Regent Street, London. In one year [...]

Alternative to Crappy Home Video of School Play

May 17th, 2005 · 1 Comment

This is a follow up to James’ suggestion that the school may try make a quick buck by selling a crappy home video of the school play re: my previous post on photography and videography being forbidden in school plays.
The whole school play, apart from being a PR exercise, should also be a learning experience [...]

Photography Forbidden

May 16th, 2005 · 4 Comments

I went to the Lady’s school anniversary play (plus variety show) last night. Most people there were parents and their kids, or friends of the school. The producers (hired guns) did an excellent job putting the show together.
The school show was a celebrating event, with no commercial value. Okay tickets were HK$100 a pop, but [...]

Hiding Your Content is Suicide

May 14th, 2005 · 4 Comments

From Ben Hammersley, “you can either open up, and we can all flourish together; or you can remain closed, and die alone”.
Our own SCMP is tightly locked down and only available to subscribers. Apple Daily’s archive is only accessible to subscribers. They are irrelevant on the web according to Google, and will eventually become irrelevant.
On [...]

Tiger Upgrade Decisions

May 13th, 2005 · 2 Comments

I am reluctant to get Tiger box set, because I have been wanting to get a new Mac to replace my TiBook for months.
A Mac Mini is cheap, but it doesn’t has enough video RAM to handle all the Tiger eye candles. I am also used to the laptop form factor, and can’t really imagine [...]

for the arrival of a pair of fraternal twins (boy and girl!). I only found out just now when I called him to get an update. I missed those photos of his offsprings he posted onto Freeforum earlier.
Reported earlier.
So the arrival of the girl has somewhat upset the statistics of NPC members offsprings’ sex. However, [...]

A Complete Waste of Time

May 7th, 2005 · Comments Off

Mother dropped off the Internet last night. No big deal, I thought, just call the KDDI staff to have mother rebooted. Two hours passed, and mother was still unaccessible. Another reboot and still no good. The KDDI staff plugged a monitor to mother, and told me that mother appeared to be unresponsive, with a bunch [...]

Nokia 7610

May 2nd, 2005 · 2 Comments

I cracked up and bought one yesterday, from the local Broadway in Tuen Mun.
Nice phone. Got a whole bunch of freebies from Broadway: an extra 128MB RS-MMC, Bluetooth handfree, extra wire handfree, extra 3rd party battery (I hope it doesn’t explode), MMC card reader (nice touch I must say, althou I already have one of [...]

I am Just Glad…

May 2nd, 2005 · 3 Comments

that Jewel in the Palace finished last night. For the last few weeks the whole household was glued in front of our tiny 14” telly every weekday night for an hour.
High quality as it is, I am still not sure that 5 hours a week for so many weeks, of the same type of entertainment, [...]
