Nokia 7610

May 2nd, 2005 · 2 Comments

I cracked up and bought one yesterday, from the local Broadway in Tuen Mun.

Nice phone. Got a whole bunch of freebies from Broadway: an extra 128MB RS-MMC, Bluetooth handfree, extra wire handfree, extra 3rd party battery (I hope it doesn’t explode), MMC card reader (nice touch I must say, althou I already have one of those 6-in-1), and a big fake leather “Nokia” travel bag. Mind you, I would be much happier if the phone is HK$300 cheaper or something.

This phone is officially supported by Tiger iSync, so this is a good reason for me to upgrade to Tiger, althou I am still considering whether to get a new Mac as my primary computer, and if so, what to get.

I don’t have GPRS on my mobile subscription, so can’t play w/ Mobile Opera for web browsing, or grab any of those freebie games or skins from the Nokia website, which seems to be only available via GPRS. CRAP.

The Series 60 UI is quite easy to use, and less confusing than UIQ on the Motorola A1000 I played with a few weeks ago. The funky keyboard is more usable than I though.

Happy so far.

How is the Chinese/English OS SMS issue with it?

Ever since Sunday took off the $38 a month fixed GPRS plan, I haven’t been using GPRS except for the odd MMS which is charged by the message instead of packets. Unless there is a very good RSS reader of the phone, I don’t see myself paying for that kind of charges to get online.

No issue w/ Chinese/English handling whatsoever.

The wish to play w/ GPRS is solely to satisfy the “done that” thing. GPRS is too slow and too expensive for practical use.

    Bluetooth transfer is great.
