The Lady is away studying hard, so Jasper didn’t go to church this morning.
We made Mango-favoured jelly desert together. We ate it. It was good fun.

Upgrade of Email System
July 31st, 2005 · Comments Off
I have just upgraded the IMAP/POP3 server on mother to the 1.0-stable version of Dovecot. Now Dovecot uses PostgreSQL as table lookup as well, so the migration is now complete.

Shit in Your Own Pool
July 30th, 2005 · Comments Off
8 years old. Together w/ parent. What sort of parent would allow teach the kid to shit right in the pool where they are swimming?
The parent should be punished for this anti-social behaviour.

Retro Mobile Phone
July 30th, 2005 · Comments Off
Little brother of “The Phone from Hell”.
HK$400 from Ap Liu Street.
It comes with a medium Li-ion battery. I am a bit concerned that it may be an old battery and therefore will die relatively quickly (the life of Li-ion batteries is about 1-2 years after they are manufactured), but it seems to be okay so [...]

We had lunch at this place. Fairly decent Chinese-style Portuguese food. Price is quite reasonable, althou in general Macau is becoming an expensive place.

MySQL vs PostgreSQL
July 26th, 2005 · Comments Off
Long story short:-
Mother’s email system uses MySQL as table lookup.
Since hosting a couple of additional domains which are constantly being bombarded by spammers, the MySQL server under heavier load kept losing connections (dropped email connection/transfer, no big deal, the other side would just retry in a few minutes) and sometimes even hanged (big [...]

Professional Internet Broadcasting

I read in last Friday’s HKEJ that Wong Yuk Man is planning to go online and start his for-fee Internet radio station. Wong figured that if he manages to get enough of his fans to pay him the HK$240 annually they are paying to Commercial Radio for access to CR’s archive to jump ship, then [...]

of a trip to the South Pole (and BACK!).
This is something the wild man inside me wants to attempt. Me as a whole can’t go, dare not go and won’t go, but I am happy to chip in for the pros to go. Good luck, team!

The Fantastic 4
July 18th, 2005 · 2 Comments
Took Jasper to see the Fantastic 4 yesterday. It was the first time he’s ever been to a cinema.
Just like any curious kid, he was asking many questions in the beginning: why do they turn off the light? What is that? Why do I not understand the dialog? Where is the human torsh? (he can’t [...]

Dino Freak Show
July 17th, 2005 · Comments Off
We took Jasper to see the Dinosaur Fossil Exhibition at City Plaza yesterday morning.
There was no big predator, so Jasper wasn’t too impressed.
It was quite crowded, and people were busy taking package tour-like photos.
We learnt more from, and definitely enjoyed more of, our Walking with Dinosaurs DVDs.
Quite disappointed.

Bokee
July 13th, 2005 · Comments Off
There was an interesting headline story in the Technology section in Tuesday’s SCMP. Fang Xingdong, founder of Bokee, a blog “portal”, is targeting to float his company on Nasdaq for US$1B. His company has already received over US$10M in venture investment within the last couple of year.
Six Apart, probably the biggest of all blog companies, [...]

Chinese as Teaching Language
July 13th, 2005 · Comments Off
School Allocation results were announced yesterday.
A couple of kids in the Lady’s class found out that they were allocated places in band 1 Chinese schools next year, broke down and started crying.
If using Chinese as the teaching language is so great, why were these young ladies so sad?

Podcasting Equipment
July 12th, 2005 · 2 Comments
I have been giving some more thoughts on equipment for podcasting.
I could just use my TiBook.
Or I could get a Edirol R1, which is small and portable, has a built-in decent condenser mike, and sounds good. The problem is, live broadcasting won’t be possible.
I looked at the Hi-MD technology. A decent Hi-MD recorder/player plus a [...]

Fast Food Menu of can.teen@IFC
July 12th, 2005 · Comments Off
After a few weeks of closing for renovation, can.teen (odd spelling which I wasn’t aware of) at the IFC is open again.
can.teen is basically an upscale version of Maxim Fast Food. Food was so-so, but cheapest in this building complex. I am a regular customer as it is convenient. Pay, grab you food and be [...]
