Artificial Lighting for Photography

August 12th, 2005 · 4 Comments

Stephen is looking into acquiring some cheap studio lights for taking pictures of baby Maddy. The cheap HID lights seem promising. I like the flourscent tube and “bulb” softboxes, althou they do seem a bit bulky.

Stephen pointed out the fact that we can do custom white-balance on our DSLRs gives us a much wider range of usable light sources for photography in (and out of) the studio.

For real cheap lightsource, you may try to DIY some fluorscent tube boxes, make it big, and use WB to control the color.

For better ones, go to SZ and get a set of studio light. I get one set for my company at RMB2400, with 2 studio flash + stands + 60”softbox.

Continuous lighting is easier to use. HID is bright and cool.

There is flickering with florescent tubes, any shutter speeds at or faster than 1/50s may have underexposures on some odd shots.

You have modeling light with studio flash. It’s not that difficult.
