Google Talk

August 24th, 2005 · 4 Comments

Grab your Windows client here.

The difference w/ Google Talk is, the XMPP protocol is open. I used to run a Jabber server, but no personal friend wanted to run yet another IM client, and the Jabber clients I used all had various degrees of difficulties in dealing w/ Chinese characters people were so fond to send me.

The voice protocol will be fully documented, so expect wide support in good time.

Looking good.

Update (25/8): I got GAIM on my SUSE Linux workstation to connect to Google Talk and ICQ at the same time w/ minimal fuss last nite. No voice call thou.

iChat on the Mac is supported on Google Talk, althou no voice call yet.

ICQ vs MSN vs AOL vs Skype, and it was a mess, so I abandoned IM. Now that we have Google Talk, one IM to bind them, one IM to rule them all. The Google Talk client is relatively light taking up only 10M(!) of RAM and not intrusive, so what is not to like?
