Mystery

August 29th, 2005 · 4 Comments

As in my HKNet/PCCW ADSL line recovered after two days, for no particular reasons I am aware of. Maybe the technician at the main switch woke up from a coma or something.

Update (13:20): Nope, the line went down again. So I called HKNet, who said they could arrange for the PCCW technician to call at my place tomorrow. I screamed bloody murder to the poor girl (politely thou!), and managed to get the technician to call on the same day.

The technician called on time, swapped the ADSL modem and left in 5 minutes. Should be okay now.

It’s it odd that two different ISP had problems at the same time? Aside from the phone line itself, what else could be the problem causing them act up at the same time. I had no problem with PCCW over the weekend.

HKNet uses PCCW facilities to provide ADSL service. Either goes down, my ADSL will be down.

It turned out to be the ADSL modem. Swapped it, and things seem to be working now.

PCCW always have problem with their ADSL modem. 2 years back when I have my own office, I use the PCCW business boardband plan. They have to change 3 modem before the connection really gets stable. Someone told me that when they get the no-working ADSL modem back, they just put it in a pool and hopefully it would work on another customer’s location.

This is the first time an ADSL modem goes down for me. Maybe I am lucky or something.

Having the technician show up at a customer’s with a dead modem is just Bad Business™, so putting dead modems back into the pool doesn’t make sense. But then it’s kinda hard to explain why all the ADSL modems I have come across so far appear to be in a used condition.
