Ghost and Cheap Hardware

October 31st, 2005 · No Comments

About eight months ago, the Lady’s Dell computer ran out of space on a 5G HD. So I ghosted the disk onto a spare 20GB WD HD lying around.

Then on Saturday the HD was giving out some squeaky noise and some odd errors. Ghost to the rescue! I ghosted it onto an old IBM 40GB DeskStar DeathStar lying around, and the computer was back up in no time. Or so I thought.

A few hours and about 2 pages of work later, the computer went beep beep beep beep and wouldn’t boot up. The Lady lost 2 pages of work. It was very good 2 pages of work. Now the Lady would have to recall them from memory, and it ain’t going to be as good.

The DeathStar died. I ghosted the 20GB WD onto another 40GB DeathStar known to work, and the Dell was back in business in half an hour.

Moral of the story: (1) backup backup backup; (2) get Ghost; (3) new spare HD around place; (4) put away old dodgy HDes.
