天水圍12師奶
January 31st, 2007 · Comments Off
I was browsing at the local bookshop, and picked up, among other books, 天水圍12師奶=.
To me, Tin Shui Wai is 20 minutes away by car, 35 minutes away by the LRT, and virtually a world away. We hear about the crappy situation in TSW, but we are not aware of the scale.
I started reading, thinking [...]

Heritage
January 27th, 2007 · Comments Off
Heritage is the history of a place or a community. It is also a part of the place or the community.
It take considerable resources to record and maintain heritage, but like the family photo album, you either do it, or you don’t. Whether that family photo album is worth anything is irrelevant, ‘cos you don’t [...]

Totally wicked.
Oh, and sshfs is also rather nice. Follow this link.

Criminalization of Downloading Pirated Music/Movie/Software: Note to Self
January 26th, 2007 · Comments Off
It is pointless to have laws which can not be effectively executed. Copyright owners are lobbying the HKSAR Govt to criminalize downloading pirated music/movie/software. They are aiming at Bittorrent. They are however chasing a moving target. Keywords they and the HKSAR Govt should look up on: encryption, tor, freenet.
Bittorrent was never meant to be anonymous. [...]

True or False Question
January 21st, 2007 · Comments Off
Educators all claim that they want to teach their students the techniques of critical thinking.
Critical thinking consists of a mental process of analyzing or evaluating information, particularly statements or propositions that people have offered as true. (My own emphasis.)
Upon discussing the merits (rather the lack of) of true or false type of questions in primary [...]

An iPod could be an excellent museum audio-guide. The only problem is theft prevention.

Smoking Ban
January 17th, 2007 · Comments Off
It’s been great.
My boss recently got married. Banquet at the Four Seasons. Cigars were given out, but no cigars. Bummer.
We have however been out eating a little bit more, and have been to some eating places where we would never consider going into before the ban. I suspect that (and certainly hope so!) the owners [...]

The Japanese Not Keen on the iPhone?
January 15th, 2007 · Comments Off
I was reading in today’s HKEJ that the Japanese are not too keen on the Apple iPhone, ‘cos their 3G phones do more brh brh brh.
The Apple iPhone is a GSM phone. There is no GSM network in Japan. You can’t use the iPhone as a phone in Japan.
Okay the QR Code is quite neat, [...]

The Future of 3G
January 11th, 2007 · 1 Comment
The news of the Apple iPhone is all over the media. An article in the Hong Kong Economic Journal this morning pointed out that the Apple iPhone does not support 3G data transfer.
Not too long ago some big guy at Creative Labs critizied the Apple iPod Nano and Apple Shuffle for their lack of features. [...]

January 4th, 2007 · Comments Off
Accompanied by the Lady, we went to the first of a series of public lectures at the Public Library in Causeway Bay. Prof Ge was excellent. I’ve only signed up for one of his two lectures, but I’ll definitely go again tomorrow.
Highly recommended.
