Educators all claim that they want to teach their students the techniques of critical thinking.
Critical thinking consists of a mental process of analyzing or evaluating information, particularly statements or propositions that people have offered as true. (My own emphasis.)
Upon discussing the merits (rather the lack of) of true or false type of questions in primary school tests and exams, I was told that the HKED actually has a guideline, basically saying that the question itself should not be a statement, e.g. it should be:-
Is Donald Tsang the centre of the universe? (T/F)
and not
Donald Tsang is the centre of the universe. (T/F)
If there is such a guideline, then we have a huge problem. Students are not tested properly on their skills of comprehension and critical thinking, and our schools are producing fools (not citizens) who would believe any printed statements.
