The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain

June 22nd, 2007 · 5 Comments

V is about to visit Spain. While Bilbao is way out up in NE Spain, I would highly recommend it.

Modern art to me was something boring and meaningless and those artists were just pretentious snobs. Well what did I know, until I visited the Guggenheim last summer. Modern art to me is an art form that p*ss around with your senses. The matter of time, a permanent presentation, is a bit like a labyrinth with steel slanted walls and is just absolutely amazing. It was a lot of fun walking in it. Then there was this Gene Davis painting “wheelbarrow”. I couldn’t stop looking at it for 15 minutes until my brain was overloaded. I had to literately lie down for a bit to recover. We only get to spend a few hours in it, but I felt that I could spend a couple of days there. Highly recommended.

Bilbao is also a lovely city. Me in this pub at around 23:00 hours, with children running around the place. (In the summer because of the heat Spaniards take a few hours off around lunch time, and finish work an hour late, so they have late supper.)

(I also visited the Tate Modern in London. I like the Guggenheim in Bilbao a lot more.)

I don’t think i’ll be able to go there this time, it’s a bit further away from places i’ll be staying. If i do a day trip there, i’ll be spending much of the time on road. So…maybe next time when i go again~There’re so much more places i wanted to visit, especially those southern cities~!!

No, Bilbao is too far from Madrid, and you’ll be kicking yourself if you are only going to be there for one day.

The simple solution is to extend the trip. Take a night train (go for 1st class sleeper! Avoid standard sleeper class AT ALL COST!) to save time.

what’s so bad with the standard sleeper class~? I’ll be taking train from Paris down to Madrid~

The EuroStar might be a little better. I took the sleeper train from Madrid to Barcelona. Top bunk. Some Mexican underneath me and another guy I don’t recall also in middle bunk, both snored at ~70db. The heat was also unbearable. Good thing I had a folding fan w/ me, but still I didn’t sleep very well at all that night. I remember the price difference was something like €40. Definitely worth it to make the trip a lot more pleasant.

Oh yes bring a couple of folding fans.

Why not take the train from Paris to Bilbao?

    Are you visiting Avignon?

coz i’ve already planned the whole thing, and have things reserved. and it’s not easy to change the reservation of the accomodation, many places are fully booked.
