Pana New AVCHD Camcorders

July 31st, 2007 · Comments Off

Panasonic’s new HD videocams. 3 CCDs, but only tiny 1/6”, which means low light performance is going to suck.
Not to mention that the AVCHD codec is still poorly supported. On the Mac, one could use Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 (but only on a MacPro) or Voltaic, but note that it takes 12x real time to [...]

Time to Upgrade!

July 26th, 2007 · Comments Off

Seagate plans to stop manufacturing IDE drives by year end. That could mean no more IDE replacement drives in a couple of years’ time. Maybe it’s time to consider upgrading those HD casings. The next lot of HDs in Mother will likely be SATA.

Lost Phones

July 24th, 2007 · Comments Off

Reader’s Digest’s social experiment. For some reasons I am not totally surprised that Hong Kong was right at the bottom, only recovering 13 out of 30 phones, and one particular incident involving a private security guard was NOT PRETTY AT ALL.

To kids the OLPC is about education. To the inner geek in me and the millions of real geeks, this is about kickstarting a new computing environment. Windows and Unix-like (including [...]

香葉越式料理

July 20th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Dinner w/ the Lady’s friends last night at this place. Been there once a few months ago for lunch and loved it. Dinner was just as good. Very reasonable price (10 of us, 9 treating the Birthday Girl, came to HK$74 per head). The icy drinks are nice-no ice cubes, but Slurpee-like ice.
Right opposite to [...]

iPhone the Smartphone

July 18th, 2007 · 2 Comments

(Written earlier.)
I am not sure everyone have grokked the reason for the iPhone’s success.
If you lay out a table of features comparing various “convergent” devices (i.e. the feature-p*ssing contest) then nope the iPhone isn’t that impressive. No 3G data, no Bluetooth stereo profile for music, and no 4-bands for networks everywhere. People complained about the [...]

The Concept of Meta

July 16th, 2007 · Comments Off

In recent communication with some Taiwanese associates, it has occurred to me that they have no concept of meta-. They would understand the business of offering a service for say telephone booking of plane tickets and show tickets, but it would appear that they couldn’t understand the simple concept of running a call centre.
