Google Apps for Domains
August 26th, 2007 · 2 Comments
We are in the process of migrating some of our users to the excellent Google Apps, which BTW I am very impressed.
This is a short screencast I did with SnapzProX, in Cantonese, showing how to import existing emails from a POP3 server. REMEMBER use your own account names and passwords!!
Enjoy.

My WP Blog Now on lighttpd+FastCGI/PHP5
August 23rd, 2007 · Comments Off
Previously running under Apache+PHP4 and then very briefly under Apache2+PHP5. I think I am settling on lighttpd+PHP5.
No noticeable performance improvement that I can tell, althou the site should seem a little slower overall, ‘cos this blog is now hosted in an overseas VPS.
Check Google on getting lighttpd to work with PHP5 using FastCGI (CGI is [...]

Bought My HP-35s RPN Scientific Calculator
August 13th, 2007 · Comments Off
I took the trip out to Mongkok on Sunday morning to visit this fine shop and got the HP-35s.
It’s a beauty. Nice keys. Tons of features and functions. It comes with a real user manual. I couldn’t be happier.

These Days, if You Want Anything Done by the HKSAR Govt, Complain to the Press
August 12th, 2007 · Comments Off
Sister-in-law lives in a public housing estate, and the neighbouring unit is occupied by a single lad who ignored basic cleaning duties of his flat so it became a cockroach dent. Roaches migrated en masse to the next-door unit (occupied by a retired senior couple) and across the corridor. The retired couple’s unit was totally [...]

I hate the Apple keyboard that came with my iMac. It’s mushy and hard at the same time and I simply didn’t like typing on it, so I am using an IOGEAR Wireless Keyboard, which has rather nice laptop-type keys. The USB Receiver and mouse charging station is however hideous, and sticks out like a [...]

Carrie Lam Has TOTALLY FAILED
August 6th, 2007 · Comments Off
Carrie Lam set out to meet the protesters at the Queen’s Pier to communicate with them. The majority of the media has praised Carrie Lam for “going into the tiger’s lair”, and the HKSAR Police Force declared their clearing of the Queen’s Pier a total success.
Compared to the PLA’s most infamous mission, the HKPF has [...]

The OHARARP SD GPS Data Logger V2.0
August 6th, 2007 · Comments Off
Link. Up to ~48 hours per charge of battery, via mini USB. Comes with a 512MB SD card but can take a 2GB SD card. It doesn’t seem like it would act as a normal GPS dongle thou.
Still, probably beats the Sony GPS Dongle.

NPC Get Together

Last Friday. The venue was so-so. We really should be going to a cheap-ish buffet dinner next time.
The folks went drinking after dinner. I was planning to go, but jumped at the chance for a lift home (hey social life does suffer a bit if you live in Tuen Mun). The ride was a very [...]

Very Powerful Software for Research
August 3rd, 2007 · Comments Off
I was reading this review of the Fujitsu SnanSnap S500m, which brought my attention to DEVONthink Pro Office. The software stores all your PDF files (plus other file types) and indices them all. The “Office” version has a built-in OCR engine to convert images into text for indexing. I wish I knew about the Office [...]

“PLS CHECK ID”

A friend of my brother’s has recently had his credit card stolen and used to buy a cheap laptop computer worth around HK$5K. The bank is demanding the card owner to pay up.
Let’s face it, signatures are easy to forge. I remember having read on the Internet quite some time ago about not signing your [...]

Queen’s Pier
August 2nd, 2007 · Comments Off
I don’t care too much about the Queen’s Pier. I have used it a few times to broad cruise boats, and that is all the links or memory (however vague) I have with the place.
My heart is however with those folks fighting for its preservation. These folks aren’t doing it for their own monetary interest. [...]
