Jusco and GOME started selling them on Saturday. On Sunday I went to Jusco in Tuen Mun to check out a sample. It shorts “cheap!” and it is cheap. Screen is small but usable. Keyboard is smaller than I would like and may be bearable. At HK$3K, they are going to sell a boatload. Except [...]

New Battery Pack for the X40
October 30th, 2007 · Comments Off
My old one could only hold about an hour of charge. I bought a new one for ~HK$1.5K (VERY REASONABLE!) from the Lenovo website. It took a little less than 2 weeks to arrive. Now the X40 is back to over 3 hours between charges. I couldn’t be happier.
My next Windows laptop will definitely be [...]

VMWare
October 30th, 2007 · Comments Off
I have been playing w/ VMWare Fusion (for Mac OS X) and VMWare Server (for Windows) over the weekend, and now have a couple of FreeBSD virtual servers running on my iMac and my X40 (both with 1.5GB RAM). This provides a server environment virtually identical to our production server facility, for use as a [...]

Follow up to my previous post, I have since discovered IBM OmniFind Yahoo! Edition, featuring configurable synonyms and featured links increase relevancy, and searches in 30+ languages.
Free (as in beer) version runs on WinXP or Linux and searches up to 500,000 documents. Probably more suitable for building that search engine for the TWGH archive.

Drug Overdose

Junkie Mike has turned clean for a year now, and has been working for a drug rehab centre. Not too long ago they had an heroin addict who “graduated” and left the centre, but on the next day died of overdose.

Very interesting and well written. Link. Makes me want to keep bees as hobby, but even the monks in the Trappist Monastery, surrounded by forestry, said they couldn’t keep bees, what little chance do I have?
Highly recommended.

Toby is picking up what he calls a new toy.
I don’t understand why anybody would call a boring minivan a toy.
But then I don’t understand train spotters or bus spotters either.

Amazon S3
October 17th, 2007 · Comments Off
Last night I spent a few hours playing with Amazon S3.
Tools I used: S3Fox and s3cmd. s3cmd is good for sending files to S3 with the command line. I am not so comfortable using S3Fox (which is far more resource intensive, being a plugin of Firefox) to transfer big files, but in any case this [...]

I am still reading this great book, The Rise and Fall of the Third Chimpanzee by Jared Diamond. In chapter 6, Diamond argued that sexual selection of our ancestors has a very notable effect on how we look, and we “learn” our sexual preference from our young age. The male would tend to prefer someone [...]
