Facebook

I have received a few invitation to join Facebook, and finally did. This is meant to be for catching up with old friends. I couldn’t find any of my mates from uni. Odd.

So they say, in Korea, email is only for old people. Maybe old people like me don’t use Facebook.

In the rate that Facebook user base has been expending, it wouldn’t be long before us “old school” people catch up with some old friends of our own.

You could be right though. The attitude of the individual friend (from the way they had been educated/brought up) might have a lot to do with them being easy or difficult to be found. For instance, LinkedIn is another site for professionals to hook up with people. While I have found a couple of Canadian friends that I knew from the ‘80s there, I doubt many HKers have even heard about LinkedIn let alone using it. So using LinkedIn for this purpose would not be very efficient.

Like I said, when I graduated from college we had nothing but Compuserve (even after working in Canada for 7 years before moving back to HK in ‘93) where none of my friends had a membership. Unlike the relatively free Internet, Compuserve was an expensive service to students. People grew up without their own PCs and grew out of their parents’ house, phone numbers were changed over several times, it would be a small miracle when we could recognize each others from photos of a person that’s 25 years older than that we knew from before.

If one cares enough, give it time. Eventually older friends would catch on like my 75 year old uncle who had started owning his own PC (as well as a Mac, if I may add) just a couple of years ago. Eventually, their demographic info would show up somewhere on Skynet the Net. Which is kinda of scary, actually.
