Kids’ Perception of Pre-history Time Scale

June 20th, 2008 · No Comments

Kids at the Lady’s school have just written an essay on “My Favourite Movie”. Funny one kid wrote about Snake on a Plane, but this is not what I want to write about.
A few kids wrote about 10,000 B.C., but they all mistook the name of the movie as “1,000,000 B.C.”, when homo erectus (the [...]

Firefox 3

June 18th, 2008 · No Comments

The download was fast (over 300KB/s!) and the upgrade was pretty much seamless. A few plugins are not yet compatible with Firefox 3 and have been automatically disabled, pending update.
A total non-event, which is the best kind of upgrade.

Dragonboat Festival at Tai O

June 15th, 2008 · Comments Off

I had the pleasure to visit Tai O during the Dragonboat Festival in 2008.
I don’t think the Dragonboat Festival has been a favourite traditional festival of my generation, and certain not for the younger generation. Traditionally there has been live! TV coverage of dragonboat races in different locations around Hong Kong all morning and early [...]

The Movie “Be Kind Rewind”

June 12th, 2008 · Comments Off

I expected a lot more hilarous remake of classic movies, but those clips were far too short (lasting only a second or two). I still like the movie.
At the end, the folks made a movie about Fats Waller (who has nothing to do with the local community). Legend was what the people made of it. [...]

I have attended two field trips in the last few weeks and took my GPS with me. I created two Google Earth KML files from the GPS data and emailed the Guangzhou file to fellow member of the travel group. Except more than half of the group have absolutely no idea what Google Earth is [...]

More on the Sony CX7

June 7th, 2008 · Comments Off

The workflow sucks.I am now deeply convinced of the usefulness of the BT wireless microphone. You could pick up much better sound by sticking that mic close to the speaker, plus any conversation between the speaker and the audience. This beats a shotgun mic. Pretty much ideal for my needs. One little nit to pick: [...]

Notes on Using my Sony CX7 on a Field Trip

June 3rd, 2008 · Comments Off

Light and small.Excellent movie image quality. Reasonable (to my own standard) low-light movie image quality. Good photo image quality.Reasonable audio quality. I have yet to scrutinze the audio quality given by the BT wireless microphone. Next time may be I’ll bring along my Zoom H2 to pick up some decent sound during meetings and presentations. The [...]

Got Back from Guangzhou Trip

June 3rd, 2008 · Comments Off

last night.
We went to see some great conservation/preservation sites and museums, and some not-so-great ones. We listened to two great talks given by the heads of the GZ Cultural Department and the GZ Archaeology Team. Conservation and preservation are hard, and the people doing it all seem to be filled w/ heart and enthusiasm, despite [...]
