I bought my D70 back in November 2004. While it still works fine (except a bit of dust on the CCD behind the filter, which should be fixable by a visit to Nikon for service) it is about 2 generations behind the current models. Pixel count is not a concern. Low light noise performance however is much much better on current models, and my trip to Inner Mongolia and Beijing in July where we visited some museums with excellent collections but low light has convinced me that an upgrade is due.
The Nikon D3 is too heavy and way beyond my budget so it’s totally out of the question. Function-wise the D700 would be ideal, and I really like it, but it stretches my budget a bit. The D90 at present has the best low-light performance among DX cameras, which might be quite adequate for my use, and costs less than half as much as the D700.
The logical choice for me would be to go for the D90 with a decent kit lens and the 100 Macro. OTOH, the D700 with much better low-light performance and better built is just so tempting. Difficult decision!

Selling all your Pentax stuffs would be a good solution for your tight budget.
