Automatic Photo Geotagging

November 16th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I have been using Picasa on Windows to manage my photo library, and got around to try to geotag the photos I took for my Inner Mongolia trip. After some Googling, I found GeoSetter, as reviewed by the excellent Free Geography Tools website.

In Geosetter, you specific a directory where a bunch of GPX (or other GPS file formats) files reside and a directory where a bunch of photo files (JPG as well as Nikon NEF) reside, tell the software the time zone of your camera, and the software would then go embed the GPS info into the metadata fields of the data files.

Each tagged photo is then marked on the map (map from Google Earth) window and you can do some location/sanity check.

This is really neat and smooth. Highly recommended.

    Indeed a cool app.

We have similar automatic geotagging service called http://www.MyGeoDiary.com which let’s users upload their gps tracks and photos. The tracks & photos can be uploaded separately and the service will try to align the photos with the appropriate gps tracks.

After the geo-alignment, the geotagged photos are published into your Flickr account (if you have authorized the service). You can publish the geotagged photo (and the gps track) to any website.

If the service is not able to place the photos properly, you can manually move the photos around OR click on a map and upload the photo to that location.

We keep working on refining our auto-geotagging algorithm (in cases where camera time is not properly set etc.).

(full disclosure: I work at Abaqus Inc.)
