Barcode Reader

June 19th, 2009 · 2 Comments

No wonder why it doesn’t bloody work! The Nokia E71 barcode reader only reads 2D (i.e. QR) barcodes and not the more common 1D barcodes at the back of books and CDs. How hard is it to support more types?

1D barcode requires accuracy on the space and bar to work properly, which could be hard to process from a “causal” snapshot. This QR code can be decoded even without a proper focus, you know.

Delicious Library 2 on the Mac reads 1D barcodes pretty well (the whole point of this software), not to mention ZXing, which enables Android and iPhone devices to read 1D and 2D barcodes.

You want to check this out. Six lines of python to read barcode at the back of a book and bring up the Google Books page on this book. Neat.
