Fsck You Blog Comment Spammers!

December 16th, 2004 · 1 Comment

Just been spammed about 500 blog comments. It’s bloody annoying.
MTv2 (even w/ the excellent MTBlacklist plugin) is totally helpless with such blog comment spam attacks. There is a very strong incentive right now for me to migrate over to WordPress, which has much better comment control and management.
Might switch over the weekend.

rewritten. It is now more efficient, cache-friendly, and most important, correct (or so I believe).

Damn You Blog Spammers!

September 7th, 2004 · 2 Comments

My MT blog database has gotten too big for mother to run the MT-blacklist.cgi despam script on 25 entries before timeout. It wouldn’t even do 10. Now I have to do 5 entries at a time, and it’s getting tedious.

Mother Data Backup

April 15th, 2004 · 1 Comment

Something based on this has been implemented on a newly installed Debian Linux server at home, pulling the /home directory on mother every four hours, and making rotating daily snapshots for seven days. Since rsync is used, only the delta (i.e. difference) is transferred over the wire and is very efficient and speedy.
Now all I [...]

The Original Sidewinder is No More

April 15th, 2004 · 1 Comment

Anja has gotten rid of the sidewinder design on the front page of her weblog, as the index.html file has become too big.
I shamelessly imitated her design back in 12/2003. My index.php file hit the 200KB mark from day one. I chopped it to display only six months of entries back in 2/2004, and right [...]

Failed Server

April 3rd, 2004 · Comments Off

Harddisk wd0 in mother (running OpenBSD RAIDframe) failed on 16/3. I didn’t find out about it until a week later and didn’t have time to replace it until the weekend of 27/3. Hardware replacement was uneventful, but total reconstruction of the failed component was slightly more involving than I thought. Data construction went along okay, [...]

The New Kid on the Block

March 3rd, 2004 · Comments Off

I have been looking at WordPress for the last couple of months, and installed a couple of instances on mother this week.
MovableType runs my weblog, and it does the job admirably well. It is however only free as in beer for non-commercial use. To use it for commercial purposes, or in a commercial environment, a [...]

MT-Blacklist

March 2nd, 2004 · 1 Comment

Bloody weblog comment spammers got on our nerves, so I bit the bullet, downloaded, read the doc and installed MT-Blacklist. The installation went smoothly.
It has been nearly a week now. No trace yet of any spam on our comments. Highly recommended.

Weblog Design Changes

February 9th, 2004 · Comments Off

I have changed my weblog design to display only six months of entries, from twelve months of entries. Gzip brought the size of the old page (text only) from 600K+ down to around 300K, but the PHP script I put together quickly was broken in the sense that it doesn’t do content negotiation, so a [...]

Revolving Window vs Annual Diary

December 27th, 2003 · 1 Comment

Right now this weblog displays entries for the last 12 months. If I don’t change anything, in a few days it will be showing entries from 1/2004 to 2/2003.
I have been considering whether to break up the weblog, i.e. generate a static one for the year 2003, and start afresh from 2004 beginning w/ just [...]

I Call It “Flickwerk”, Anja Calls It “Sidewinder”

December 16th, 2003 · Comments Off

I have just received an email from Anja giving me her blessing for implementing her “sidewinder” idea in my weblog.
The Flickwerk weblog is a static file rendered by the wickedly cool Tinderbox.
I couldn’t figure out how to get MovableType to sort out blog entries by months and render them into the index page. Instead I [...]

Finally…

December 15th, 2003 · 1 Comment

A new look for the default page of this weblog. A whole year’s worth of blog on one page!
The design is a cheap imitation of Anja Rau’s excellent Flickwerk design. I hope Anja takes this as a form of flattery.

Gone Back to the Clean Style

November 10th, 2003 · 6 Comments

for my weblog. This is the only one with the links and navigation on the left hand side and contents on the right hand side. The default MT styles with links on the right hand side kinda collapse if the content block is too short: the links block expands across the screen.
