Sir Ken Robinson on Creativity and Education

March 22nd, 2008 · Comments Off

While the HKSAR Govt is still p*ssing about with the language of instructions, we really should be reviewing the whole of education. Excellent talk. Take education of your children, back into your hands.

Long Waiting List for Popular Kindergartens

January 24th, 2008 · Comments Off

The local birth rate seems to have hit an all-time high, after a very low few years. A friend applied to the two Salvation Army Nursery Schools in Shatin not long after her little girl was born, and she was already at ~80 on both waiting lists. I discussed this with Jasper’s headmistress. She seems [...]

The Home of (Mostly) Cheap and Crappy Toys

December 1st, 2007 · Comments Off

Big chain toy store has just opened in Tuen Mun. Not sure this is good or bad news. Mind you, we got a child booster seat (for car) and a trampoline all at reasonable prices from their Tsing Yi shop.

My Prediction: Skin Colour of the Hong Kong Population Will be Darker

October 13th, 2007 · 3 Comments

I am still reading this great book, The Rise and Fall of the Third Chimpanzee by Jared Diamond. In chapter 6, Diamond argued that sexual selection of our ancestors has a very notable effect on how we look, and we “learn” our sexual preference from our young age. The male would tend to prefer someone [...]

5 Common Mistakes Parents Make w/ Newborns

September 9th, 2007 · 1 Comment

After a few years of extremely low birth rates in Hong Kong, it would appear that things are swinging the other way. Two cousins have just given birth, a colleague is due in September and a good friend is due in November.
Check this out. I’ve always thought that a newborn baby sleeping thru the night [...]

Bruce Lee

May 18th, 2007 · Comments Off

Why Was I Not Informed About Bruce Lee?
Good thing Jasper’s already seen the Fist of Fury, and he is well aware that Bruce Lee was absolutely the best fighter, ever. Even better than Kamen Riders. Well Bruce is dead and so noone could ever hope to beat him.

Our Wii Policy for Jasper

April 2nd, 2007 · Comments Off

We have had the Nintendo Wii for some time, and we are mostly enjoying it. Jasper’s gotten so good with Wii Sports Tennis that he is beating everyone in the household. Good eye-hand coordination!
We try to keep all good things in moderation for him, and used to allow him about half an hour on the [...]

Frog Hopper at Ocean Park

June 22nd, 2006 · Comments Off

Back in 2004, when Jasper first went to the OP and went up the Frog Hopper, he was very mad.
Last Sunday we went to the OP while the Lady was away in Macau.

He did it three times.

Primary Schools in Tuen Mun

June 14th, 2006 · Comments Off

Last week I took the morning off to visit a local primary school, arranged by Jasper’s nursery. Althou it will be another 2 years before Jasper attends primary school, we will have to make a choice for him much sooner, and it doesn’t hurt to learn a bit more about the popular schools in the [...]

Jasper on Jenga

I am somewhat surprised that Jasper is perfectly capable of playing a good game of Jenga. He loses most of the time and he could be a bad loser, but I am sure he’ll in time improve.

Nursery vs Kindergarten

May 17th, 2006 · Comments Off

Typhoon signal #3, and all kindergartens are closed. Jasper’s nursery however is still open (for the benefit of the working parents!), althou attendence is optional for the day.
I am happy to cooperate with the hard-working teachers to make their life easier, so Jasper is taking the day off.

Small Mishap

April 15th, 2006 · 3 Comments

I took Jasper to the Ocean Park (got an annual pass) yesterday. The Citibus service from Admiralty to OP only stops in Tai Shue Wan (although there is a free service going from Tai Shue Wan to the main gate) so we went to the Middle Kingdom first, then use the escalator to go back [...]

Dilemma?

March 3rd, 2006 · 3 Comments

Well not exactly “dilemma” as such, but rather a “difficult decision”.

Wiping His Own Backside

October 20th, 2005 · Comments Off

Jasper demonstrated to us that he knew how to wipe his own backside. Apparently they went thru it at the nursery, while discussing excrement. Not bad at all.
Now they are discussing the food pyramid.

Excrement.”
Yeap, that’s what Jasper’s class wants to do, according to the class journal. The teachers had some doubts, but decided to respect the kids’ idea.
“Some shit is long.” Jasper suggested in class.
I spoke to Jasper last night. While the topic is somewhat interesting, and I find the kids’ sense of humour amusing, getting carried away [...]
