Alex Hofford’s Man & Shark

March 3rd, 2010 · No Comments

人鯊誌 from alexhofford on Vimeo.
Interesting movie. One small thing however: a part (from ~1:40 to 2:20) shows a few primitive fishermen doing small-scale shark-hunting and fin-cutting, which I think probably would not convince anyone that sharks are being over-hunted. This may be a little confusing, and I think it is important to get the [...]

Avignon, France 2006

March 3rd, 2010 · No Comments

有同事最近歐遊,目的地之一是法國Avignon亞維農。我在2006年時到此一遊,印像深刻。同事在亞維農的相片不多,我有點失望,故此借這個機會重溫一下我自己當時所拍的,並將選輯放上網。

Euro Trip 2006 – Avignon

Nikkor 24/1.4G

March 3rd, 2010 · No Comments

In the film ages, armed with my faithful and soulful Pentax LX and FA*24/2 I was as happy as a clam. The package was solid, easy to use, relatively small and for my travel use (I was never into long range zoom lenses), versatile.
My present rig is a Nikon D300 and 18-70 kit lens. The package [...]

Canon 500D

June 29th, 2009 · Comments Off

Me and the Lady have just spent a long weekend in Beijing, and I have had the opportunity to use a friend’s newly bought Canon 500D. It’s compact and very light. The camera is snappy and the built-in flash works rather well as fill-in in standard program mode. Nice.
The only complaint I can think of [...]

KODACHROME is No More

June 23rd, 2009 · Comments Off

A Tribute to KODACHROME.
Kodachrome
They give us those nice bright colors
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world’s a sunny day,
Oh yeah I got a Nikon Pentax camera
I love to take a photograph
So mama don’t take my Kodachrome away
KODACHROME (K64) was slow, but it has this most distinctive and pleasant colour palette, [...]

Wetland Park Again

Wetland Park 20090508

Jasper’s off today, so I took him again to the Wetland Park.
Bumped into old friend from the NPC-era, Wilson Lee. He’s now a professional photographer doing rather well.
The Nikon binos I got for myself and Jasper are both very good, and very useful.
I got Jasper and myself our own “Nature Journal”, for jotting [...]

Wetland Park Again

May 2nd, 2009 · 1 Comment

We went to the Wetland Park again on Friday. Took the Lady’s ancient Nikkor 70-210 (something like this, but the older non-D version) from her college days with me to shoot some birds and bugs.

I have never done much nature photography. It is hard, takes a lot of equipment, time, patience and luck.
I think the good [...]

考察易,整理資理難。

April 19th, 2009 · Comments Off

First Pentax DSLR

April 18th, 2009 · Comments Off

I picked up a Pentax K20D for cheap on Friday, and have been playing with it today.

It is supposed to be very good, and indeed has some very interesting features.
It is very well made, and is fully weather-sealed.
Image quality is not quite up to my expectation. I understand that the standard setting needs some tweaking.
My [...]

Elgato turbo.264 HD

March 21st, 2009 · Comments Off

Hardware H.264 encoder. Link via site and site.
Mac only thou, and I now use Sony Vegas Studio (Windows) for editing my AVCHD clips. The workflow still sucks.
(Looking at Elgato’s sales pitch, I think it is a little bit misleading. This USB dongle only helps in encoding the movie clip for final consumption. Importing the clip from the [...]

More Comments on the Sony CX7

March 17th, 2009 · Comments Off

I’ve put a couple of movie clips I took of archaeologists giving us a tour of the Yanshi and Erlitou sites as 480×272 MP4 files on the Internet for viewing by a few friends. James pointed out that some parts of the clips were “choppy”. I thought it was moderate frame-dropping caused by slow CPU, [...]

Guangzhou during the Spring Festival

February 5th, 2009 · Comments Off

2009 Spring Festival, Guangzhou
We went to Guangzhou with my parents and a friend during the Spring Festival. Great place, and I think my parents enjoyed the trip. We stayed at the White Swan Hotel, which unfortunately was a bit stuffy and the duvets were too think, so none of us really slept all that well. [...]

Got my Fuji GA645 out and cleaned it up last night. Went out during lunch just now to get a couple of CR123A batteries (they last ages on this camera) and some 120 film (2 rolls of Fiji Pro 400H and 5 rolls of Kodak BW400CN). I didn’t get any slide films ‘cos I want [...]

Interesting Mac Software: BoinxTV

November 21st, 2008 · Comments Off

Just received info from the fine folks at Boinx on their new wicked software, BoinxTV. Simple description is, “TV station in a box”. A decent iMac or MacBook Pro, a couple of Firewire-equipped video cameras, a big green screen, some lighting, and you are in business.
Pity the system software on my ancient iMac Core Duo is too [...]

Automatic Photo Geotagging

November 16th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I have been using Picasa on Windows to manage my photo library, and got around to try to geotag the photos I took for my Inner Mongolia trip. After some Googling, I found GeoSetter, as reviewed by the excellent Free Geography Tools website.
In Geosetter, you specific a directory where a bunch of GPX (or other [...]
