I have the Ship, L4D1 and L4D2 that I hardly ever play. Red Alert 3 and Mirror’s Edge, which I have not even installed and played once. And don’t get me started on Civilization IV, which is totally addictive and I am just too scared to start.

Now, another round of Team Fortress 2!

Retrieving your out-of-your-mouth regulator (respirator) underwater is one of the must-have skills for divers. I was taught two methods to do it. The one I found easier is that you tilt your body to the right, extend your right arm towards the back, swing it slowly to the front and you should have it in your arm. Grab it put it in your mouth and breath. The slightly more difficult one is to grab your “first stage” (i.e. at the top of your tank) over your right shoulder, and run your hand along the top hose till you grab the no. 1 regulator.

Well, this season I have acquired some very nice gear. It is most important to become intimately familiar with your gear, so into the pool I went. When I did the drill I noticed that the tilt-body-swing-arm method didn’t work, so I reached over my shoulder. It wasn’t as easy as before but still totally manageable , and I thought no more of it.

While reading Scubboard, I note that my nice regulator is actually of neutral buoyancy (meaning that it neither sinks or rises in water). Training regulators are usually less fancy and therefore heavier, pulling the hose so the whole thing is hanging down the side vertically, allowing the tilt-body-swing-arm trick to work. No big deal. Just different.

Under Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum, importing/dragging a movie clip in only gives the video, but no sound. It appears that the sound track embedded in WX-1 movie clips is mono, so while most media player plays the these clips fine, for some reasons Vegas simply ignores the mono sound track. However, it seems to work fine w/ iMovie on my Mac. Crap.

I love my Sony ECMHW1 Bluetooth wireless microphone. The setup is easy to use, pretty foolproof, with excellent sound quality and range, and inexpensive. Getting good sound is half the work when shooting video, and nothing beats a good wireless mic for recording your subject talking. IMHO this puts Sony consumer-grade equipment well ahead of competitors.

When I visited the Sony Style shop in CWB on Friday night, I discovered the new ECMAW3, for which the receiver can be plugged straight into any mic-in jack. I have not played with it, but if it works as well as the ECMHW1, then for anyone who doesn’t have a Sony camcorder and wants decent sound, go get it.

I’ve been looking for a new watch for diving and everyday use.

The Casio G-Shock Frogman is supposed to be built for diving. The latest models run on solar (good!), are super-tough (good!) and have diving log (great!). One model even picks up radio signals and calibrate itself (cool!). They are however rather expensive, and the displays are far too small for me to read comfortably under water. Fail.

I picked up a cheap-ish Seiko Automatic (mechanical!) diver’s watch. When I was a kid I had a Citizen automatic mechanical watch, which needed annual lube service after a couple of years or it would just not run. I have been quite weary of mechanical watches since then.

Since wearing this new Seiko I have picked up the habit of comparing the time on my watch with the time on my mobile phone (calibrated with network time server), although I keep telling myself I am not too worried about time accuracy to the second.

We’ll see how my 2nd mechanical watch ever works out.
